Overview[edit]
The series are based on the romanticized Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel and the historical text Records of the Three Kingdoms, the storyline takes place during the Han Dynasty in China with many warring factions that included the Shu Han, Cao Wei and Eastern Wu kingdoms. Gameplay revolves around managing numerical statistics, each representing an attribute of a city or a character. A city is described by statistics such as stored grain supplies, vulnerability to disasters such as floods and earthquakes, treasury funds, domestic affairs and populace loyalty. Characters are numerically characterized by their leadership abilities, melee prowess, intellects and loyalty, as well as special traits or even magical abilities that can be called upon whether during wartime, diplomacy or domestic affairs. Players can increase these numbers before waging war on neighbouring territories or intending diplomatic efforts.
While generally presented as a turn-based strategy game, the seventh, eighth and tenth editions offer role-playing features, allowing the player to play as a rank-and-file character instead of leading a kingdom.
Several spin-offs based on the series include the tactical action hack and slash video game Dynasty Warriors, Dynasty Tactics which is a hybrid of Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, as well as the three tactical-game novels Sangokushi Eiketsuden (Liu Bei), Sangokushi Koumeiden (Zhuge Liang), and Sangokushi Sousouden (Cao Cao).

Reception[edit]
Sangokushi received positive critical reception in North America when it was released there in 1988. In Computer Gaming World, the game was reviewed by Dungeons & Dragons creator Dave Arneson, who wrote that it is 'a great historical simulation and will keep players at their keyboards for many a night in order to win their empires. It has economics, intrigue, bribery, covert action, diplomacy, war, and more! There are many ways beyond simple conquest to accomplish one's goals.' He concluded: 'I most heartily recommend Romance to all serious game players out there.'[3]
In December 1989, Computer Gaming World readers gave it an average rating of 8.96 out of 10, making it the magazine's 13th highest user-rated game at the time.[4] In 1990 and 1993 surveys of historical strategy and war games, the magazine gave Romance of the Three Kingdoms three-plus stars out of five.[5][6]
As of 2017, the series has shipped more than 7.5 million copies worldwide.[7]

Description of Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Without a doubt, KOEI's flagship Romance of The Three Kingdoms games are some of the best and most original historical strategy games ever made. Based on the classic Chinese epic of the same name, choose to play as one of the warlords vying to unite the far-flung Chinese empire in the 10th century.
The first entrant in the RtK series strikes a near-perfect balance between historical flavor and fun, as they feature hundreds of real historical personalities, each with unique traits, and great diplomatic and espionage options. The tactical-level combat is not only fun, but truly reward those who take Sun Tzu's 'Ancient Art of War' tome to heart (among the most effective tactics are flanking your enemies from high ground, and luring them into an ambush). One of the game's keys to success is the introduction of intricate personnel management that adds a whole new dimension never before seen in a computer game. Recruiting and rewarding your most capable generals is as important to victory as slaying your opponent's most valued generals in combat (if you can't persuade him to your cause). You can also try to woo your opponents' generals to your side by bribery or personal visits, for which having a high charisma level is all-important.
Romance of The Three Kingdoms 1 also boasts numerous other gameplay options that wonderfully capture the culture and society of China at the time: for instance, the number of your population and morale level determines how big an army you can raise, and improved irrigation and donations to the public are prerequisites to high harvest yields and happy townsfolk. You must also contend with natural disasters such as flood, locusts, and plague that can come without warning.
Overall, an all-time strategy classics that belong to every strategy gamer's collection. Two thumbs up!

@Zoot For @Jimmy, answer after 3 years maybe useless. But for other people that end up reading this and having a same problem, the answer is very useful.
Too late maybe, but the answer will be never meaningless :)

My friends and I would play this game for hours.
By the way answering questions 3 and 5 years later probably is meaningless :)

@JIMMY: Whence you've downloaded the game, mount the game, CD to whatever you called the folder you put it in, then choose MAIN.EXE. Then, it will ask if you want it in colour mode. It will give you a choice of Y/N. Choose Y to make it go into colour mode. You're good.

This game works, but how do I make sure I have color when playing it? The game automatically shoves me into the old black and white mode, from this time period, instead of the much better VGA/SVGA graphics for this time period.
I also found that ROTK 3 was being tough to run, but maybe I screwed something up on my end.Maybe I need to have DOS Box that people have said on this site before. Write a comment
